Content Ratings

Learn about artwork file content ratings, why they are needed and how they may affect your order.

What is a Content Rating?

A content rating is a scale used to indicate the inclusion and level of nudity, sexual material, graphic violence or offensive language in your artwork files. This highlights content which is inappropriate for minors or viewing in a public or professional setting. ‘Content’ refers to text, drawings, illustrations, real life photography, hyper-realistic AI imagery and links or QR codes leading to online content.

Why is a Content Rating needed?

Mixam supports artistic and creative expression and empowers creators to print a broad range of content, including work that explores mature, sensitive, or potentially controversial themes. However, because we work with a global network of print partners, acceptable content standards can vary between production facilities and local regulations.

Content ratings are gathered to ensure your product takes the smoothest and most efficient supply chain route possible, with content ratings having a potential effect on the speed, cost and production facility your order is sent to. Making a confident indication before you add your product to your cart ensures any product pricing and estimated dispatch or delivery dates remains consistent throughout your ordering journey.

Why might I see price variance?

You may see prices differences for the exact same product specification between Levels 1 and 2, however there is no premium applied to content rating specifically. Mixam support artistic creativity and price inconsistency is not a reflection on the topics, subjects or themes expressed in your expected or uploaded artwork files. Pricing differences are simply caused when there are fewer facilities that support printing NSFW content, or, your product contains less commonly supported material specifications.

Please be assured, our instant quote calculator is a price aggregator and we always offer you the lowest price available for your chosen combination of material specifications and content rating. To mitigate price variance, we continually work on expanding our global production support for the depth of materials our calculators offer.

How is a Content Rating applied?

The rating applies individually to every product in your order. It is selected on our instant price calculator before you add your product to cart and can be adjusted later in the artwork upload process. You should base your rating on the highest content level within your files - be it just one page or the entire product.
If your artwork files or anticipated design do not contain any sensitive content, there is no need to make an indication, our price calculators are set to show this by default.
