Public API

The Mixam Public API is designed to provide seamless integration of our comprehensive printing services into your applications. Built with the OpenAPI v3 schema, our API ensures a standardized and efficient way to interact with our services. Developers can easily download the OpenAPI schema for detailed information and integration purposes.

Key functionalities include:

  • Retrieve Available Products: Get a complete list of all available print products offered by Mixam.
  • Product Options: Access detailed options for each product, including paper types, paper weights, binding types, lamination options, and more, to customize your print projects precisely to your needs.
  • Place Orders: Submit print orders directly through the API, ensuring a smooth and efficient order placement process.
  • Order Management: Retrieve detailed information about your orders, including current statuses, to keep track of progress and updates in real-time.

Additionally, we offer a Swagger UI tool, which allows you to try out and view the API interactively. This tool provides an intuitive interface to explore the API endpoints, execute requests, and see responses, making it easier to understand and utilize our API capabilities.

Security

Please note that you must have a Mixam account to access the API.

Obtaining a JWT Token

Once your account is approved, you will need a JSON Web Token (JWT) to authenticate your API requests. Follow these steps to obtain your JWT token:

Security Flow
  • Send a Basic Auth Request:

    Use your approved credentials to make a Basic Auth request to the /api/user/token endpoint. Your username is the email address you used to register an account. The password is the password for your account.

    Endpoint:

    Authorization: Basic
  • Receive the JWT Token:

    On successful authentication, the API will return a JWT token. This token will be used for authenticating subsequent API requests.

Making Authenticated API Requests

With the JWT token obtained in the previous step, you can now make requests to other API endpoints using Bearer Token Authentication. Include the token in the Authorization header of your requests.

Users API

The Users API allows you to retrieve detailed information about a specified user account, including their orders and quotes. This API is designed to provide access to user-specific data, enabling you to manage your account effectively. Note: You can only fetch user information and orders/quotes for your own user account.

To get information about a user, make a GET request to the /api/public/user endpoint.

Products API

The Products API allows users to retrieve available products and their respective options from the system. This API is crucial for obtaining the necessary metadata required to construct a valid ItemSpecification, which is used to obtain pricing.

Retrieving Available Products

To get the available products, make a GET request to the /api/public/products endpoint. This endpoint returns a list of products along with their options.

Retrieving Product Metadata

Once you have the productId and subProductId and quoteType from the product options, you can retrieve the metadata for a specific product. This metadata includes all possible components, attributes, and values required to construct a valid ItemSpecification which will be required to retrieve prices for an item or place an order.

Note: You can send the locale attribute as a request attribute if you would like the response to have locale specific language for a supported language ?locale=de_DE

An ItemSpecification consists of one or more components, depending on the type of product being described. Each component encapsulates specific aspects of the item, ensuring that every detail is meticulously defined.

Orders API

The Orders API allows you to create or retrieve orders. This API provides comprehensive details about each order, including its status, items, and associated metadata. You can only retrieve an order that has been created under your own user account.

Order Processing Workflow

This section describes the detailed workflow for order processing in Mixam, from the initial order submission to the final order status updates.

Steps in the Order Processing Workflow:
  1. Client Submits Order: The client submits an order create request containing items and artwork to Mixam.
  2. Order Creation: Mixam creates the order and responds to the client confirming the order creation.
  3. Artwork Submission: Mixam submits the artwork to the Assets Processing Engine for processing.
  4. Artwork Validation: The Assets Processing Engine validates the artwork, checking for any errors such as size discrepancies.
  5. Validation Complete: The Assets Processing Engine informs Mixam that the artwork validation is complete.
  6. Webhook Notification: Mixam sends a webhook to the client's specified callback URL containing the status of the order and any artwork errors detected.
  7. Order Placed on Hold: If the artwork has errors or there are missing artwork pages, the order is placed on hold and not automatically processed.
  8. Order Confirmed: If there are no errors in the artwork, Mixam confirms the order.
  9. Order Submitted for Production: Mixam submits the order for production to the Assets Processing Engine.
  10. PDF Conversion: The Assets Processing Engine produces PDF X1A compliant print files.
  11. Conversion Complete: The Assets Processing Engine informs Mixam that the PDF X1A conversion is complete.
  12. Send to Production Facility: Mixam sends the order details to the production facility for processing. The production facility informs Mixam when the item has been dispatched, and Mixam notifies the client via the callback URL that the item has been shipped.

Create an Order

To create a new order, make a POST request to the /api/public/orders endpoint. Each item can specify an offerId or leave it blank. If the offerId is left blank, then the system will automatically choose the best price option. This is useful if you just want to integrate the Order API without retrieving a live price.

Webhooks

It is important to listen to the callback requests sent to the specified statusCallbackUrl when creating an order. When an order is submitted, we asynchronously validate the artwork files, which can take some time depending on the size of the files. If an error is detected during this validation process, the order will not be processed. Therefore, it is crucial to handle these callbacks appropriately to ensure that any artwork errors are addressed promptly.

Webhooks API

The Webhooks API allows you to receive real-time updates about the status of your orders. When you create an order via the API, you can specify a callback URL where we will send status updates. Whenever the status of the order changes, we send the data as JSON to the specified endpoint via an HTTP POST request. If you prefer not to use webhooks to retrieve the order status, you can use the Order API to poll for the same order status information using the endpoint api/public/orders/{orderId}/status.

Order Status Update Webhook

The Order Status Update Webhook is triggered whenever the status of an order changes. This allows you to keep track of your orders in real time by receiving updates directly to your specified callback URL.

Artwork Guidelines

The Artwork Guidelines provide detailed instructions on how to prepare and submit your artwork files for various types of products. Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure that your order is processed smoothly and efficiently.

Bound Items

For bound items, the artwork should be supplied as two separate components: Covers and Body. Each component should be in a format that supports multipage documents, such as PDF, Word, or PowerPoint.

  • Covers: The covers can be supplied as either a single spread or individual page elements (Front Cover, Back Cover, and Spine). We recommend naming the file Covers.
  • Body: The body pages can be supplied as either double page spreads or single pages. We recommend naming the file Body.

Flat Items

For flat items, the artwork should be supplied as a single document. If the product is double-sided, ensure that the first page in the document is the Front Side and the last page is the Back Side.

Folded Items

For folded items, the artwork should be supplied as a single document, preferably as a spread (flat size). If the product is double-sided, ensure that the first spread in the document is the Front Side and the last spread is the Back Side.

General Recommendations
  • File Format: Use high-resolution PDF files whenever possible to ensure the best print quality.
  • Color Mode: Ensure your files are in CMYK color mode to avoid color discrepancies during printing.
  • Bleed: Include a 3mm bleed on all sides of your artwork to prevent white edges after trimming.
  • Safe Area: Keep important elements (text, logos, etc.) at least 5mm away from the edges to avoid being cut off.
  • Fonts: Embed all fonts or convert text to outlines to prevent font substitution issues.
